Yesterday, the plan to expand Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium was approved and this rendering of the east end zone seating was released. I apologize for how small the above image is but I had to squeeze it into the post. Click here or on the image above for a larger version. Corley Redfoot Zack, Inc.  is the designer and they have done a variety of projects for the university including the Student Recreation Center and the Minges Coliseum renovation.

See below for some specs that I found from bluewaterpirate over on Boneyard Banter:

Funding Source: Athletic Receipts

Designer: Corley Redfoot Zack, Inc.

Building Contract Method: Construction Manager at Risk – T.A. Loving Company

Project Identification: Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium Improvements – East End Zone Seating

Location: Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium

Square Footage: Seating – 39,600 sf | Concourse buildings – 11,949 sf

Budget: $16,000,000

Project Phase: Design Development Documents

Functional Description: This project will provide 7,000 seats in the east end zone of Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium. Concession and restroom facilities for the associated seats will also be provided.

Projected Completion: July 2010

Anticipated Completion: July 2010

I can’t wait for this project to be finished. Adding 7,000 seats to Dowdy-Ficklen is just the start of it. This rendering goes into some great detail. I am huge fan of the sabres that will be located at each support column. The triple window that contains ECU looks awesome and even the little people walking into the stadium have me getting way too excited for football season. I would guess that this expansion would add about 5-10 more vendors in the stadium which will make us more money.

According to e.c.t.c. over on Boneyard, the expansion will not be attached to the current stadium because it would require the rest of Dowdy-Ficklen to be brought up to code to match current standards. Over time, I believe that this issue will be addressed and the rest of the stadium will be filled in.

Not only will it be much louder at Dowdy-Ficklen once this project is completed, but it will also better position ECU for membership into a BCS conference.

    GO PIRATES!

Hey Paul, I agree. Adding 7000 students in the endzone will increase the college football atmosphere dramatically and hopefully increase our chances of heading into the BCS. It will also open up a lot of great 50 yard line seats to Pirate Club members on the north side of the stadium. We should know by the end of the month if the end zone expansion will take place next year. Can’t wait for football season! Go Pirates!

Great to know the Pirate faithful have stepped up the donations and membership this year! I was beginning to worry somewhat about the lack of/no advertising from the University, athletic department and Pirate Club on the expansion. Advertising does cost $$$ but I believe it would have guaranteed the donations and excitement to get everyone behind the fundraising for the expansion, especially with the shape the economy is in.

To anyone that has the info. Is the new east end zone expansion going to connect in anyway to the north and south portion of the stadium?

I cannot tell, based on the sketch if it’s connected or not. It would be much more effective, and the BCS type of atmosphare would be experiance, if we had the horshoe design.

    Please respond..Anybody

    Thanks

Adds a whole new dimension to selecting which side to defend. Away teams will have to score in the student section in the 4th quarter. Good Luck
