It didn’t take long for a player with ECU ties to get scooped up in the MLB draft on Tuesday, June 9. With the 25th pick, the Anaheim Angels drafted ECU commit, Mike Trout.

ECU had high hopes for the outfielder from Millville Senior High School in New Jersey.  According the LA Angels:

Trout, 6-1 and 205 pounds, is an all-around athlete who excelled at shortstop and as a pitcher in high school. Committed to East Carolina University, he batted .520 as a senior with 17 home runs and has plus speed. He also was 12-4 with a 1.77 ERA, striking out 124 batters in 76 innings.

It sure would have been nice to see him in purple and gold in 2010. According to PirateEngineer on Boneyard Banter, there are many others with ECU ties that have been drafted. Below is a list:

Mike Trout – commit – 1 (25) – Anaheim
Nick McBride – commit – 5 (154) – Texas
Devin Harris – R-Soph – 8 (236) – Baltimore
Ryan Wood – Senior – 11 (332) – Kansas City
Chris Heston – Junior – 12 (357) – San Francisco
Walker Gourley – commit – 13 (385) – Pittsburgh
Stephen Batts – Senior – 19 (587) – Philadelphia
John Wooten – commit – 20 (594) – San Diego

It’s great to see these guys with ECU ties making an impact in the MLB. Now let’s follow them as they progress through the minors and hopefully one day have a chance to play in the ‘bigs.’

  1. Says:

Trout, the 25th pick of the draft, is reportedly seeking a signing bonus of $2.5 million.

The price tag is pretty steep considering the player who was chosen with the 25th pick in last year, Christian Friedrich out of Eastern Kentucky, received a signing bonus worth $1.35 million from the Rockies.

Maybe this will all play out to ECU’s advantage, and Trout will be in a Pirate uniform next season.

We can always keep our fingers crossed.

Somethings telling me that Trout will take what he can get and split. I would love for him to come to Greenville though.
